Heidibella in the Tropics is sponsoring the first ever CAKE OFF and we need your votes to render a decision on the best cake! Now, I know you can't taste them, so you will be voting on the following criteria:
- Appeal - does it look tasty?
- Presentation - is it pretty? would you buy it for a party?
- Photography - does the picture do it justice?
Today's cake is a DEVIL'S FOOD CAKE with COFFEE BUTTERCREAM. We have two entries. Click on each of the links below to look at two photographs of each cake, and then leave your vote in this post's comments below. You can write whatever you wish, but your comment must clearly state which you think is the winner. Well this is so hard but i'm going to be honest... they both look apeeling to me the presentention is great in both and yes i would buy them for a party, now my vote, sorry Mich but I'm going with heidi and i'll tell you why, for my taste i don't like to much sweet and your toping look more sweet to my eye than heidi's i feel like i can get empalagado easier with yours than heidi's and thats preety much why, i think it looks better with a simple look like heidi's now to tell you, if i was gonna have a party with friends i would buy heidi's, but if i'm gonna have party with kids... i would buy michelle's and thats my final VOTE!!! He dicho...! Gracias...!

1. Presentation -
I must say, 2 beautiful looking cakes. I think they are both even there, something you'd expect in a showcase at the bakery. I love the fact that Michelle's looks like a chocolate chip cookie.
2. Appeal -
I'm not sure what is on Michelle's cake, looks like giant jelly-beans. And I see what appears to be chocolate sprinkled across the top on Heidi's cake, I would jump on Heidi's cake, it's more appealing to me because it looks like it's got more chocolate flavor than Michelle's.
3.Photography -
Michelle's cake: Great top picture (chocolate chip cookie), but the profile (side) picture is dark. Can't see the texture of the cake, needs more light.
Heidi's Cake: I see that chocolate sprinkled across the top and it looks delicious. Also, the slice out of the cake is very smart, shows the cake off with the layers, and it's something I would want to see before buying one. Shows no surprises.
Winner in my opinion:
Heidi's Cake
Good luck to you both! :-)

I have to vote for Heidi's on presentation even though I don't care for chocolate...Michi;s is also very appealing but given a choice, that would be it...Congrats to both!!!

How do I choose between my own two sisters' cakes???
I'm going to have to look at it 12 times now.

I feel the need to clarify, not that I am begging for votes here...no really, I'm not. Those are not jelly beans, they are not plums, they are not cherries. They are dark chocolate covered espresso beans. Vote for me...please. Just kidding :)

Heidi your're cake Rocks!!! but I'm going with Michelle's Cake. Hope you have more luck next time ;)

Ok at first I thought this was kinda funny, but I'm not laughing anymore - I have THREE browser windows open and I've looked at each cake so many times I've sworn off cakes forever. I feel like a crow in the bakery window, cocking my head one way and the other. I am spending an inORDinate amount of time on this and I have to go to the prissypants high end mall today to take Skye to spend her gift cert (not a place to go when you feel like a crow) for her trip. I really should recuse myself anyway. You should have done this about the Elwood. I'm calling in reinforcements.

1. Appeal: After looking at both cakes my vote for appeal goes to Michelle. My main reason for swaying in this direction would be because since I know those are espresso beans covered in chocotate and that will really add to the flavor. It was a close call Heidi.
2.Presentation: Again a close call. Heidi's has a more traditional look to it but Michelle took some chances with her more contemporary look, which again sways me in her favor. I think next time a few drippings on the side would add to the look.
3.Photography: In this catagory Heidi has made a better image. Get some lights out Michelle!
2 to 1 in Michelle's favor!!!! Hoorrayy Michelle (sorry Heidi)
PS: I get to eat the one Michelle made:)

It appears I have the pity vote down pat!

I like the white one (I - Chris - showed them to both girls with the names of the cakes covered) because it looks tasty; I like the sprinkle stuff.
Winner: Heidi's cake

I like the roundness of the tan one. The chocolates look like they'd have a good texture in your mouth. Also, the picture from above is "framed." I've learned in art that framing a picture makes it easier for the viewer to focus on the subject.
Winner: Michelle

I (Chris) forgot to say that Skye said Michelle's cake looked "like a happy cake." LOL
Posted by: Skye | March 12, 2006 at 12:39 PM
I was agonizing, so I showed the girls (see their opinions above). Skye suggested I take each of the suggested criteria and judge accordingly.
1. Appeal: Michelle's seems to have more frosting and a slightly more casual look. So here it depends on use, as Gappy said. Who's going to eat them? They actually don't look like the same recipe - I have the impression that if I tasted Michelle's the frosting would be coffee/mocha flavored, and Heidi's more like whipped cream. Because I like less frosting and don't care for coffee flavor other than in my hot black coffee (with the exception of chocolate covered espresso beans, which these are, but still, the frosting...) I'd pick Heidi's to taste.
2. Presentation: I like the sprinkled cocoa, but I think once cut, Michelle's cake would lose the more casual look and seem more elegant with the decoration individually on each piece. If I were shopping online for some cake I would want to see the inside. Judging on presentation alone, I would pick Heidi's.
3. Photography: Heidi's new digi gives her photos a great crispness that is really cool (see the pics of the choco-covered pretzels - made me want to eat some even tho I don't like them)and she's developed a very professional eye. I like Heidi's composition in these pics, the lighting and the color. Michelle's is darker on that one side view - but how do you do that where you take a pic from over and you get it dead center? You must have a food cam. LOL
Heidi's looks more like a pic from a foodie site. So, Heidi!
Winner: Heidi!
Next time you do this, I will assume my crow personna and come peck at you. ROFL

I find it so hard to decide between the two the both look so . . . . I vote for the third option a cake from Momi.

Well, talk about being put between a rock and a hard place! Choosing between Heidi and Michi´s cakes! But honestly, I can say it is a tie for me and I´ll tell you why specifically. I thought the icing on Michelle´s looked more appealing and yummy, but not showing the inside of the cake was a mistake and I voted for the inside of Heidi´s. What a relief! Saved by the tie!

Besos.
Julie.

I will stick to the rules provided above:
1. Appeal: They both look tasty.
2. Presentation: They both look pretty. I would by either one for a party.
3. Photography: I think the pictures do more justice to Heidi´s than Michelle´s.
Winner: Michelle´s (by means of a technicality)
Posted by: Iván | March 13, 2006 at 09:13 AM
very tough call, however, here's our final decision:
appeal: of course they both look like I could comermelos de una sentada, so definitely a tie.
presentation: while heidi's has a very professional look to it, michelle's frosting looks all gooey and thick and gooey is always good (heidi's on the other hand, looks fluffier).
photography: also a tie, like I said, I couldn't help wondering what I'd do if left alone with either one of them just from looking at the pictures.
There was one more thing that influenced the vote, the cake's name was devil's food with coffee buttercream and michelle's definitely looked like it had more coffee flavor.
so michelle gets the vote (sorry heidi, maybe if you would've given us that slice you took out so we tried it....). also, a suggestion: showing the names of the participants distracts you, try revealing them at the very end.

They both look good, I agree with Gappy, I would buy Michelle's for a kids party and Hidi's for a more grown up fiesta. Taste, I don't care, I would probably eat them both.
The only thing I would do for the next time I think the pictures need a bit of work, "a picture is worth a thousand words"...other than that good job to both.

el de Heidi se ve mas apepitoso! Is that a word? anyway, I'm sure Michelle's is just as delicious. I have to be democratic here as she bakes stuff for me all the time and I don't want her to stop. And here is my cheap plug. "please visit my Ebay Store!" http://stores.ebay.com/Samson-and-Delilah-Salon

Se me olvido decir que my decision was based on the way it was photographed. Kudos to Heidi. You should become a stock photographer. And did I mention on my last post that you can visit my ebay store? Yes I'm a "sales whore", as Michelle often calls me. http://stores.ebay.com/Samson-and-Delilah-Salon
