Friday night is classic dinner-and-a-movie night don't you think? I remember when I was in college, I used to watch a show called Dinner and a Movie on TBS. They would always pair the movie with a dinner in the theme of the film. It was fun to watch because they would come back from commercial and cook and then show you some of the movie and then come back to the cooking. The show was exploring TV cooking as entertainment, way before Food Network. I decided to look up Dinner and a Movie on google and guess what...they're still showing it on TBS! We don't get TBS down here in the tropics so I wouldn't know, but it gives me a warm feeling to know that they're still doing dinner and a movie on Friday nights.
So last night, we did dinner and a movie at Michelle and Austin's. The theme was Asian, at least for the food because the movie didn't quite match! We had chicken stir-fry made by Austin, cold sesame noodles by me, and yummy won tons made by Michelle. I also made strawberry cannoli parfaits which totally screwed up the Asian theme but I saw Jamie Deen make it and I had to try it. Everything was absolutely delish...but I have to say that the best thing was the Ginger-Soy dipping sauce that Michelle served with the won tons. I almost wanted to drink it like a soup.
The film was oh so good! Definitely an improvement over 3:10 To Yuma which we saw last Friday. Ok...I was the only one who didn't rave about it...but I hate Westerns so it was expected.
Last night's movie was Big Night starring Stanley Tucci, Tony Shalhoub, Minnie Driver, and Isabella Rossellini. Big Night was released in 1996 and won several awards. It's about two immigrant Italian brothers who try to save their struggling restaurant by throwing a lavish party. The screenplay is hilarious and the acting top-notch. I have a new respect for Stanley Tucci who was amazing in the film, not to mention that he co-directed it.
I tend to love movies that are centered around food, like Chocolat and Eat Drink Man Woman for example. And now I'm adding Big Night to the list. Do not watch this movie without some kind of yummy food to satisfy your cravings. Imagine watching a delectable Italian feast being made before your eyes and you end up stuffing a half-eaten Snickers bar in your mouth. Torture! Why not try my version of an Italian feast and pop Big Night into your dvd player as you indulge?
