Panama City wakes this morning in tears as the rain comes down reminding us of the tragedy that happened last night in the Cuscatlán Stadium in San Salvador. Panama lost 3-1 against El Salvador in the World Cup 2010 qualifiers. I'm not going to comment on the loss, or why and how I think it happened...because every Panamanian (and El Salvadorian) has their own opinion and are entitled to it. What I am going to mention though, is the undeniable fact that last night's game was a perfect example of why Central American countries will always be considered developing countries...works in progress...Third World.
Soccer is an international sport...played in more countries than any other. It brings people together, in many aspects. And last night, as I watched so-called "fans" of the sport throwing trash onto the field and attacking players just because they were the opposing team, I grew sadder and sadder. I couldn't believe the long ribbons of what looked like toilet paper that remained in one corner of the field throughout the entire game. It broke my heart to see goalkeepers cleaning up the ends of the field, picking up water bottles and cans, so that they could play properly. Not only did the players have to battle the elements of nature on a water-logged field, but they also had to overcome the disrespect of a crowd that thinks it's proper sportsmanship and "part of the game" to express emotions in such a disgusting manner. In the privacy of my sister's living room I was embarrassed for every single Central American who had to sit and watch as their love of sports, patriotism, and Latin pride were dragged through the mud on that field. When will we learn how to behave like a civilized people? My guess is...never.
