On Wednesday night, Gab and I were invited by our friends Kira and Julie to see a play at the Teatro La Quadra. The play was Morir O No Morir, written by Spanish playwright Sergi Belbel. I had never heard of the play before, and to be honest, I wasn't expecting much. But as it turned out it was the perfect formula for a great evening...when you don't really know what to expect, and what expectations you have are exceeded to the max, you end up so incredibly satisfied! The acting and direction was sensational, and the material the actors had to work with was awesome. Dark humor, dramatic with hilarious interludes that had me rolling on the floor...highly entertaining. The best part of the evening was when, after the curtain call, our friends, Kira and Julie, were given an award by the play's director, Isabel Burgos. Kira and Julie, through their company Salt + Pepper Inc, donate award-winning design work to the theatre. It is for this selfless contribution and support of the arts that my friends were recognized. They are an example for all of us to follow. And so I ask each and every one of you (whether you reside in Panama or are just visiting) to go to a museum, an art exhibit, a play...every once in a while. If you enjoy it, recommend it to your friends. Better yet, volunteer some of your time to the people who, after a hard day of work at their day jobs that put food on the table, work their fingers to the bone to bring their passion for the arts to life. If you're interested in seeing Morir O No Morir, it will be playing until June 8. Call 214-3695 for information. You will not be disappointed.
